Why Everyone Should Have A Blog

My husband has been visiting blogs for as long as I can remember. I never really understood the fascination and would always lecture him about blogs being such a waste of his time.

That was until a friend of mine moved with her family to Taiwan for the next two years. She decided with the move she would start a blog to keep in touch with everyone.

Fortunately, the way the blog was set up, it looked like you had to start your own blog to leave a comment on her blog. I heard my husband’s voice in my head that had said for the past year that I should start my own blog. I took the bait and I have been completely hooked ever since. I visit my blog several times throughout the day to see if anyone came (even though I kept it private) or if my husband left me any messages. I love writing, posting pictures, visiting other blogs, etc.

So for all those reluctant readers/writers out there, here is a list of why you should jump into the relatively new phenomenon of blogs and why it is essential to have a blog.

Blogs allows you to keep in touch.

Being a transplant to Houston, it isn’t always easy to stay in touch with family and friends from home. A blog is a great way to upload pics of the grandkids, tell about their latest accomplishments, etc. This way you do not have to be shocked at the outrageous phone bill at the end of the month.

Blogs give you a forum.

If you are a writer, it is nice to have a place to share your thoughts, ideas, inspirations, stories, etc. A blog makes that possible. You can just let off steam or share your opinion on restaurants, music, entertainment, whatever! It gives you a place where your thoughts do matter. It lets you say what you want to say without having to worry about being cut off or edited. It gives you a voice.

You don’t have to be a Techie.

The great thing about blogs is that you don’t have to be a computer geek to have one. There are some great sites that allow you to have a blog that are really dummy-proof. For instance, I recently started a blog on blogspot.com. The site had design templates for my website that I could choose from along with some custom options. Posting to my blog is easy and understandable. I don’t have to know html code or anything like that. So, you see, it is easy to jump into the tech world and have your own site.

Blogs are a great way to have a personal journal.

I have friends who have had blogs to journal their pregnancy and birth of their children. I have seen blogs about marriage planning, growing in Christ, etc.

Blogs are great for businesses.

Businesses can use blogs to pass on tips and information to their customers and get immediate feedback. It is also a way for customers to stay in contact with businesses. Blogs are instant so it can allow reviews of new products, ideas, thoughts, etc. It also can be a great marketing tool. It could show customers that service is a top priority. Some sites also allow you to place Google ads on your blog as a way to earn a little extra money.

Blogs provide social contacts.

Blogs allow individuals to socialize with others with the same interests. Say you start a blog on religious issues-blogs allow others with the same beliefs (or different as well) to interact with you and each other. It is a free exchange of ideas from all over the world.

I hope I was able to convince you of the advantages of the blog and why everyone should have one. There are many sites that allow you to have a blog free of charge. Such sites are www.blogspot.com or typepad.com. If you already own your own site, you can create your own by downloading Wordpress or Moveable Type.
