What You Need To Know To Prepare For The Simpsons Movie

Friday, July 27, marks the release of one of fandom’s long-awaited feature films. The Simpsons Movie has been four years in the making, but fans have been waiting for this movie for much longer. For those who think the most popular Simpsons are Jessica and Ashley, here are the top five things you need to be prepared for the summer’s most anticipated release.
Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, assures us that there is enough entertainment to go around. To be sure, there will be plenty of in jokes and gags that will catch the eye of the die hard fan, but the movie will not lose the newcomers. The twenty-year-plus run of the TV show shouldn’t scare you off, just let you know that these guys know what they’re doing!
It’s Not Just a Two-Hour Sitcom
Another promise from Groening and the reason it has taken so long to produce. The movie took four years from start to finish because the creators wanted it to stand on its own. Viewers can be assured of a great plot, lots of drama and excitement and undoubtedly some serious destruction.
It Will Be Irreverent
The Simpsons is a satirical look at Middle American life. Nothing is safe from their humor. The writers have even gone so far as to make fun of the company that pays their checks, Newscorp and the Fox Television Station. Plan on more of the same in the movie, but don’t take it (or yourself) too seriously. The goal isn’t to tear down, just to get people to laugh at themselves.
It’s Larger Than Life
One of the things that Groening and the writers of The Simpsons pride themselves in is taking full advantage of the medium. Unlike the typical live action sitcom family, the Simpsons have traveled all over the world. They’ve al died a few times (usually as part of a Halloween special), seen everything from Godzilla to tomacco (tomato-tobacco cross pollination) to parodies of the Kennedys. And in the eighteen years that the show has been on, Bart hasn’t aged a day (even though he’s celebrated a few birthdays).
It’s a Great Introduction
As hard as it is to believe, there are still a few people that are not familiar with the most famous animated family. My challenge to them is to go see the movie. Get to know the Simpsons. You’ll be hooked. And then tune in Sundays at 8 p.m. eastern to continue the relationship. Once you realize what you’ve been missing you’ll let out a great, big D’OH! Don’t worry, you’ll get the joke soon enough.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Laura, I remember first seeing the Simpsons over 20 years ago and I never dreamed it would last as long as it had. (I hate to admit it... shhh...) and I am going to see it this weekend but then again, I am a true Spongebob fan as well... Great article, thanks!
