Birthday Ideas for Turning Thirty

I turn old this week (my condolences to those who are older.) As a kid, I always thought 30 was so old. I thought by the time I was 30 I would have so much accomplished, so many achievements. But this week it is here and I find myself wishing it would go away.

I used to think those women who complained about getting older were being ridiculous. Now I completely understand. I was out with my girlfriends this past Christmas. All of us are turning 30 this year and we were all discussing how surprising it is that this life change is hitting us so hard. We decided that, although we are hundreds of miles apart, the rest of the year we should celebrate this birthday differently. So here are some suggestions for spending your 30th birthday in style.

For the Adventure Seeker

My friend is spending her 30th jumping out of an airplane. That’s right, for those who have no fear and still want to feel an adrenaline rush, skydiving is an excellent means for forgetting that you are old. Last year, the nation watched as President Bush, Sr. jumped out of a plane on his 80th birthday.

For the Mourner

For those who just want to mourn the day, dress in black and prepare like you are going to your funeral. I know a woman whose husband threw her a wake for her 30th birthday. He even had a pastor come and do the eulogy. Sit down and write your own eulogy, it might make you realize that you have accomplished more than you thought.

For Those Who Wish to Escape

The great thing about living in America is that there is a spa on every corner. Make an appointment to spend the day away from reality while improving those 30 year-old looks. Schedule a massage, facial, pedicure, manicure or even a haircut, anything that lets you relax and feel luxurious at the same time.

For the Sentimentalist

Sit down and look through your baby book, then make a scrapbook of your life. Look back over your 30 years and relive the memories of time spent with family, friends and other people who drifted into your life. Then make a list of the things that happened to you and the people you knew or know that mean the world to you. I am positive that it will make turning 30 look a lot better.

For the Coffee Lover

Spend the day at a coffee house sipping your true love. Relax and watch the different generations of people come in and out. Remember what you were like at that age or fantasize what you will be like when older. There is actually a set of four novellas out called Fresh Brewed Love based on romances that occur in coffee houses. Curl up in a book and read the day away.

Whether you ignore the day or celebrate it, remember it is only 24 hours then it is on as usual. Besides, we get to start counting backwards next year, right? We get to go back to being 29?

Toni, I do not know you, but I completely agree. TO everyone else, I am turning 30 March 2008 (3 weeks), and am writing a book around that theme. I am looking to collect stories/philosophy/lessons learned or wisdom gained from people who are 29/30 - up to 31 - to be included in my published book. Anyone interested? I will check back here in a few days. (Today is 2/23/08) Thank you!

I am double that age plus five!
I still enjoy all the things I did at 20, 30,40, 50, 60, I had a career in mainframe computers and I out lasted them!

The only difference is a few more aches and pains, and I down shifted to a lower gear. Retirement has allowed me to do what I want, when I want, if I want.

Enjoy every day of your life!

Interesting idea's on turning 3O I will be that in 2010 bring on that new year. Should I be scared? My mind says "keep away you older age years". Wish that were true but isn't gonna happen.

I turn thirty on Sunday - mothers day. And I am a first time mum of 6 month old Ember. My partner is taking us away for the weekend to stay in a Yurt!! I think that having a baby makes me look at turning 3-0 in a new light. I can embrace rather than fear the 'getting older' :)

I will be turning the big 3-0 in August, and have to say that I am not where I thought I would be at 30, but am blessed for the lessons I have learned, the blessings to have the people whom I love in my life, and take each day as it comes. My prayer is that this next decade will be filled even more wonderful lessons, and memories for me to share, and enjoy each day the best way I can. Cheers to turning 30!
