What Do You Want For Christmas?

While driving today, the local radio station had listeners call in and tell what they wanted for Christmas. It was interesting for me to listen to others tell the one thing they wanted answered on their list.

As I listened, I couldn't help but have tears come to my eyes. Christmas brings about a time of hope for people. A time for the impossible to be possible is part of believing in and celebrating the holiday.

I will admit that as our society becomes more and more materialistic, I was still surprised by many callers' answers to the questions.

One woman wanted to be able to adopt a child who had Leukemia and was currently living in Foster Care. It takes a special kind of person to ask for such a selfless wish.

Another woman wanted a boyfriend. "Just someone to love and that will love me." However, there were no requests for world peace. At least, some have moved passed that request. Nevermind, I take that back. There was a request for Jesus to come back.

As I listened with my kids, I decided to see if they were grasping the question. I wanted to find out what they would say to the question. My kids never surprise me. My four-year-old's response made me once again curse Nick Jr.

"I want the baby and the dog that swims with you in the pool," she said. "You know the one where you can push a button and it swims with you. I am four now and can swim under water and I think the dog swims under water."

I ask again if she understood the question. "If you could have one wish this Christmas, anything you wanted-you would want a doll and dog that swims?"

"Yes, you know, the one that swims in the pool with you," she said.

"I didn't know they even had a dog," I said giving up on some philosophical answer that would have proven my kid is the brightest four year old in the world.

"I saw it on a commerkal," she said.

Of course she did. At least her response wasn't as interesting as my friend's two-year-old daughter. She asked the same question when listening to the radio. Her daughter's response was one that made me laugh hysterically.

"I am going to ask Santa for monsters and toes," she exclaimed.

"You can't ask Santa for toes," her three-year-old brother responded.

What is your wish this Christmas? Is it toes? Is it the baby that swims? Is it for the opportunity to see Christmas through your children's eyes one more time as an adult?

This year has been such a joy for me watching my kids get so excited about the Holiday season. After all, hope, love and joy are what this season is all about.

Merry Christmas and I hope your one wish comes true this year!

I am sure some extra toes would be quite useful but you make your point well. I think world peace may be a little out of our reach right now but peace under our own roofs would be a good place to start . Happy Holidays!
