Maxim's Top 100 Most Beautiful Women: Who Determines Beauty?

The list is out and males are flocking to the newsstands. Reporters are picking it up and reporting on it showcasing the top 100 beautiful women picked by Maxim the magazine.

In fact, the magazine refers to its yearly list as "The definitive list of the world's most beautiful women."

The big news this year is that there is a new number one on the list of most beautiful women. Olivia Wilde of House fame has taken the number one spot.

The surprise on the list is first lady Michelle Obama. She barely made the cut coming in at number 93. It was the first time a first lady has appeared on the list. I guess the list was not around during Jackie Kennedy's day.

All this aside, I am going to pull the feminist card out here. Are we not a little sick of Maxim determining who is beautiful or what is beautiful? What qualifications do they have?

What bothers me is the message we send women. We tell our daughters every day that beauty is on the inside. Then we showcase the opposite in every visual picture they see throughout the day.

Even us as mothers and wives, find ourselves in constant comparison trying to keep the attention of our husbands and men in our life.

We preach this verse to our daughters and to ourselves:
"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. That is the way the holy women of old made themselves beautiful."
1 Peter 3:3-6

Yet, we are bombarded by a society that shows us the opposite. I get irritated with girls blatantly showing my son parts they should not reveal or flirting in ways they should not at their age. Yet that is all they see and know to do.

I get frustrated because the shorts that fit my daughter in the waste are so short you see her parts when she bends. Therefore, I have to buy a size bigger. The same is true with dresses and shirts. Everything is designed to be revealing, even for young girls.

What isn't shown is how much the women on these lists actually go through to look that good. It takes a team of professionals to bring out that so called beauty. Just check out the video.
Maxim may sell millions with their lists, but I challenge them to go through that list and show me the women with inner beauty who are making a difference in society. I think the amount can be counted on one hand. Feel free to leave your comments and views.

Laura,

And what of the World's Sexiest Men? Whoever runs that list. But getting back to the women, you don't have to watch the video, just look at the paparazzi photos of the Hollywood types without their makeup. Low and behold, they're human! Without the makeup, hair done, cloths, and maybe a pound gained here or there . . . my gosh! they're just like us. What a shock! Thanks for the article.
