Can your iPhone Explode?

News is coming out of France that several iPhones have exploded spontaneously because of a battery overheating issue.

A security guard complained this week that he was hit in the eye with a glass shard when his iPhone cracked up or exploded.

Apple is officially denying the allegations releasing the following statement.

"To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits," Apple said in a statement. "The iPhones with broken glass that we have analysed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone."

Apple has sold 26 million iPhones and 200 million iPods to date.

One French couple stands by the report that their iPhone exploded without warning with no action from them.

So who is right? While we have not heard of this issue in the United States, the UK, Holland and Sweden have reported similar stories. A french watchdog and European commission are both investigating the claims.

I wonder if the air pressure and traveling or the way they are shipped is causing some kind of effect on the iPhone. I find it hard to believe that so many people are claiming that their iPhone exploded if it did not.

On the flip side, there has been no complaints in the US or before. I wonder if maybe it is just something with the new phones. Either way, if I was Apple, I would start a campaign quickly to get to the root of the problem or investigate further before it gets out of hand and leads to possible recalls.

Interesting article Laura. I am hoping, for the sake of safety that Apple is right (the thought of IED-style iPhones is a little troubling to me), but the skeptic in me says the people who are complaining about this are right --- no company wants to admit they have a problem like this with their product. Thanks again for calling our attention to this.
