For those who are unaware, the US soccer team secured a spot to compete in the FIFA World Cup 2010 in Africa. Last night, they secured a higher seed with a come from behind tie to Costa Rica.

This week has been a difficult week for the US team when news broke about striker Charlie Davies suffering many injuries in an early morning car accident that left one  person dead.

Davies suffered two broken bones in his leg, a lacerated bladder, face fractures and a messed up elbow. Not good news for a soccer player. Especially wasn't good news for the US team who dependent on Davies for more than just points.

Davies has an energy about him. If anyone ever met him, they could not help to smile. How do I know this? One word: Twitter.

My family has followed Davies on Twitter for the last few months. We laughed at the videos of him teaching teammates how to do the "stanky leg." We felt at home as he showed pictures of his home in France. When not playing on the US team, he plays for FC Sochaux in France. We laughed with him when he posted the picture of David Beckham checking out a cheerleader and getting caught by his wife.

We even felt like part of the team. His last post was a picture of the guys on the bus. Therefore, when news broke of his wreck, we were a little saddened. Not just because of the amount of talent he possesses, but because we felt that we knew him. Twitter has a knack for doing that, making people seem more personable.

It was only inevitable that his name would come up at dinner prayer time.

"Tick Tock Goes The Clock. Now It is Time To Pray. Thank You God For Our Food. Please Make Paw Paw Sonny Frank feel better. Please Make Bubba Get Better," my cute little four year old girl said.

"Don't forget about Charlie Davies," the eight year old future professional soccer player whispered to his sister.

"I don't know what happened," she whispered back.

"He was in a wreck," he whispered back.

"Please God give him a new car," she responded.

I think Davies would have got a kick out of that. He seems to always have a great sense of humor. We could not help but laugh after feeling down after the news.

I am sure he also laughed as the US Team beat Coast Rica team in the final seconds or watching the post game antics of his team. I am sure he couldn't help but shake his head and chuckle at goalie Tim Howard taking a cowboy hat from a fan to walk around the field.

He had to be moved as his team and fans paid tribute to him throughout the game with a minute of silence during the ninth minute or the endless banners or accolades to Davies.

We still do not know why Davies was out after curfew or even what caused the one car accident. I am not sure if it really matters at this point. We do know that we will miss one of the greatest players at the World Cup.

An email has been set up for fans to send messages to Davies, charliedavies9@yahoo.com. Be sure to let him know that as Americans, we love him and hope he gets better soon. He has a long road of recovery. They are printing out the messages and taking them into the hospital daily.
