Twilight is coming off one of the most successful weekends then any movie in history. The movie all started with a book. Granted, it is one of the greatest book series that has been released in a long, long time.
It brought up a great discussion in my family. Turning books into movies can either be really successful or really bad.
As we discussed this, The Cat In the Hat starring Jim Carrey was on television. We began discussing what makes a bad movie versus good movie. My son brought up that he did not like when they added stuff to the movies that were not in the books.
However, all of this got us to thinking about what book inspired movies that were done well and would make great gifts. Here are our top picks.
The Princess Bride-this is a classic. I have to admit, I am not a fan of this book or movie, but it is more for personal reasons. My husband goes around quoting lines from this movie daily. After 11 years, it gets pretty annoying. However, guys love this movie for some reason and it definitely deserves to be on the list.
Horton Hears A Who-this is a great kid gift. Give it to the child in your life along with a hard copy of the book. You can even go a step farther and include a Horton stuffed elephant. Unlike Cat In the Hat, this movie stayed true to the story and makes a great movie.
Lord of the Ring Trilogy- I know this is an older movie series, but the movies are amazingly done. It is definitely for older kids and adults. It makes a great gift too included with the books.
Harry Potter Movie set-I was never into Harry Potter, but the friends I do have will swear the movies are just as good as the books. This is a great gift for teenagers and up.
Twilight-With all the talk of New Moon, the first movie is forgotten. It makes a great gift and was done well. You can also include a ticket to the new movie in your gift package.
Hamlet-Got a high school student? There is nothing more painful for high school kids then having to read Shakespeare. Hamlet is actually one of my favorites of his stories. The movie was right on with Mel Gibson and can make a great educational gift.
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs will not hit stores until January. This is a great movie for kids. You may buy the book for your children to get them excited about the January release date.
Bridget Jones' Diary-These are cute movies for the women in your life. The book is also entertaining and make great gifts.
These are just a few suggestions. I am sure you have your favorite books that have been made into movies. Feel free to share them in the comment section below. Also, feel free to share the books that made horrible movies.
Enjoy your Christmas shopping!
