The Cursed Bird That Turned My Life Upside Down

When I was in college, I signed up for one of the fluff honors college classes to meet my requirements.

I signed up for a Movie Survey class in which we were going to watch movies and then study/write about different conflicts and themes. I honestly signed up because my most favorite professor was teaching the class and I thought it would be an easy A and tons of fun. Who doesn't like a class in which the majority of the class is spent watching movies with friends?

Little did I know the scars that I would get that I recently found are still here today.

See, there was this movie that we had to watch. Some of you might have seen it. It was Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. There is this scene in the movie that has been ingrained into my mind of the woman on the sidewalk walking when all the birds come down to attack her.

I had nightmares for weeks in collge.

Yesterday, those nightmares came true. Granted it was only with one bird, but it really seemed like hundreds to me.

I was sorting clothes and towels for laundry in my room when something evil flew at my head. I ran screaming out of my bedroom. I was certain it was a bat or an eye poking out bird.

As I ran into the living room, I was most concerned that my chiweenie was looking at me like I was crazy. Did he not understand the horror that was waiting us in the other room?

Then it happened.

The thing came flying through the hallway sending me screaming again. It then landed on my dining room table. It was then that I saw the evil for what it really was: a bird.

He hopped across my table then decided to throw himself on my dryer where it sat staring at me-contemplating its next move of attack, I was sure.

I opened the front door in hopes that it would get the hint. It just stared refusing to make a move.

I did what any sane woman would do at that point. I grabbed the dog, got in the car and ran.

As I waited for my prince to rescue me from the evil bird, I picked up my daughter and played as we waited in the front yard. My daughter, naïve, kept insisting we go inside.

As my husband showed up, the two of them went inside with joy and laughter to find the bird. It was proud to fly from the kitchen to the living room. My prince retrieved the broom and shooed him out with no problem.

I thought my nightmare was over. I was wrong.

Despite being made fun of for the remainder of the day while others showed concern over the evil bird, I thought I was never more ready for bed.

Then the long night began. My daughter was waking up ever two hours. Finally at 5:30 a.m., she explained that she had a dream that she was wanting to tell us about.

What do you think the dream was about? You guessed it, the bird.

Apparently she dreamed he stayed in our house for two days. When we finally got him out, we found ten eggs hidden around the house. She asked me if she could keep them and I told her “only after they hatch." (As if, that would ever happen)

So we put the eggs outside the front door for the birds to pick up. Then she asked me if they had hatched. When we found them they were just cracked so I told her she had to wait longer.

Then she asked again. We looked again. Sure enough, the eggs had hatched and ten pretty pink butterflies that had green stripes were flying out of the eggs. She wanted to make sure I realized that the green stripes were diagonal instead of straight across.

I then apparently opened the door and let all of the butterflies come inside to live with us. Her remarking proudly about how this was the best dream ever.

I was up at 5:30 for this? While I am impressed with the detail of the dream, it concerns me that this bird has caused this much trouble in my life. It also concerns me that she would believe a butterfly could come from an egg, but that is a whole other story.

Most of all I am concerned that she feels that I would ever allow anything flying, crawling or moving live with us in our house. They should rightly live outside as they were created to do so.

I think I am due for a much needed nap!! :)
