What Happened to Sacrifice?

I have been hearing this word over and over resonate in my head during my alone time with God. It is sad that in our society today, the action of sacrifice is often overlooked. Don't worry, I am guilty of this as well. I can't tell you how many times, we have manipulated our budget just so we didn't have to sacrifice.
Today, I posted the following statement to my status on Facebook:
I told my husband how I would be so impressed if instead of threats, President Obama would come forward and say that he would not get paid for a year in order to put some money back in our economy. After all, his wife and him seem to be set with book deals and other sources of income such as speaking engagements. How much does one person really need? I would be just as impressed if a Congressman did the same.
It reminded me of Campus Crusade for Christ finder Bill Bright. Bright was the embodiment of Christ. His organization does more for modeling Christ then any organization I have ever seen. Perhaps what many do not know is that Bright was a giving man! What may don't realize is that his wife and him took a rather small salary by today's standards and gave the rest away.
"Campus Crusade employees, including co-founders Bill (during his lifetime) and Vonette Bright, raise their own financial support to pay their own salaries. Bill and Vonette Bright's 2002 combined income (excluding housing) was $50,570," according to their website.
Not only that, Bright gave the remaining income he made from his more then 60 books to Campus Crusade and would take no money for speaking fees. In 1996, Bright was named the recipient of the $1.1 million Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. He donated the prize money to causes promoting the spiritual benefits of fasting and prayer.
Wow! Can you imagine a member of Congress giving away $1.1 million? Bright believed in the work of Campus Crusade for Christ. Does our president and Congress believe in our country? I know this is a silly comparison, but it really makes me wonder about our values. What do we believe in anymore?
People always say that if you look where you spend your money, that is where your values and priorities lie. Where is Congress and the President spending their own money? Where are you? It is a wake up call-not sure I want to admit where the majority of my money goes!!
